According to a report published yesterday by the U.S. Department of Homeland security, a new vulnerability has been discovered and it has the potential to be similar in devastation and even easier to exploit than WannaCry. This time the way in is through widely used networking software called Samba which provides file and print services to SMB (Server Message Block)/CIFS (Common Internet File System) clients.
Rebekah Brown of Rapid7, a cybersecurity company, reported to Reuters that there were no signs yet of attackers exploiting the vulnerability in the 12 hours since its discovery was announced. She also added that it had only taken researchers 15 minutes to develop malware that made use of the hole. She said “this one seems to be very, very easy to exploit.”
Samba has released a security update for versions of Samba from 3.5.0 forward. If you are currently using Samba version 3.5.0 or newer, click here to download the security update.
